And we will never make the earth green enough to end global warming."

Maybe it's time to choose another way.

I will daily express an attitude of gratitude, for all the blessings in my life, even those I cannot see.

Whenever I feel stressed, pressed or confused, I will take a Blessing Breather, quieting my mind for a moment and focusing only on my breath, breathing deeply and slowly. With each inhalation, I will mentally affirm "I am so blessed" and with each exhalation, I will mentally affirm "I am a blessing to the world," repeating the process at least three times and allowing my body to relax completely before returning to the task at hand."

May this exercise be a blessing to you personally and a collective blessing of making the earth green enough and growing the forests on our planet together.

Sustainability Discussions Rock the University of Miami in January

December 12, 2007 (Algonquin, IL) – Sustainability discussions will reach record numbers of students, teachers, politicians, government agencies, business leaders, and all interested local groups in Miami, FL, on January 31st, 2008. The Chlorine Free Products Association (C.F.P.A.) will be holding its third Sustainability Roundtable event at the Bank United Center from 8:30am to 4:00pm. This series of discussions brings together regional university faculty and students along with government organizations, business leaders and local professionals to talk about how sustainability practices can improve business processes, cross-educate participants about systems that work, and connect attendees through networking and shared resources. Kevin Lyons, Ph.D., Director, Purchasing Department Research Professor, Supply Chain Environmental Management from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, will be the distinguished moderator for these discussions in Miami. Dr. Kenneth Broad, Professor, Division of Marine Affairs and Policy and the Abess Center for Ecosystem Science and Policy, will be sharing his comments during the event’s mid-day luncheon. Communities, Corporations and Countries Deliver on Planting of One Billion Trees

UNEP and ICRAF Initiative to Catalyse Planting of 1 Billion Trees Reaches Goal in Advance of Next Climate Convention Conference

NAIROBI, 28 November 2007--An indigenous pencil cedar, or perhaps an African olive tree, planted in the Horn of Africa has become a living symbol of enduring hope, optimism and action for communities and countries determined to combat climate change and revive biodiversity.

Today the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) announced that a promise made last year at the UN Climate Convention meeting to plant a billion trees had been met.

Achim Steiner, UN Under-Secretary-General and UNEP Executive Director, said: "I am delighted to say that an initiative to catalyse the pledging and the planting of 1 billion trees has achieved and indeed surpassed its mark. It is a further sign of the breathtaking momentum witnessed this year on the challenge for this generation-climate change."

"There had been a few cynical smiles and shaking of heads when the Billion Tree Campaign was launched. Some said it would never happen, and others couldn't at first see the raison d'être. But citizen after citizen, community after community and country after country, have proved the doubters wrong and demonstrated an abiding truth in 2007", he added.

"Namely that given a focus and the chance to act, millions if not billions of people around this world want an end to pollution and environmental deterioration and have rolled up their sleeves and got their hands dirty to prove the point", said Mr. Steiner.

Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai, the Kenyan Green Belt Movement founder and co-patron of the campaign, said: "I am elated beyond words at the global interest and action that was motivated by the Billion Tree Campaign. I knew we had it within us as a human family to rise up! We called you to action almost exactly a year ago and you responded beyond our dreams. Thank you very much! Now we must keep the pressure on and continue the good work for the planet. Plant another tree today in celebration!"

The enthusiasm of individuals to make a difference is underlined by figures collected by UNEP which indicate that half of all those who planted are often private citizens or households planting one to three trees. Significantly, another 13 per cent have been planted by the private sector, which participated actively in the initiative.

ICRAF Director-General Dennis Garrity said: "The World Agroforestry Centre is very proud that the ambitious goal of the Billion Tree Campaign has been attained. This milestone shows clearly that the global community has the spirit and the substance to unite in achieving ambitious targets to create a better environment for all. We look forward to working with UNEP and so many other organizations in setting and achieving even greater stretch goals for
a more 'bountreeful' world in the coming years."

The news comes as thousands of delegates across the world are ready to arrive on the Indonesian island of Bali for the next and most crucial round of global warming negotiations under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), jointly established by UNEP and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), has in 2007 concluded that climate change is happening; the global impacts are likely to be in many cases devastating but cost-effective solutions are available now to counter the worst.

The Billion Tree Campaign, inspired by a remark by Wangari Maathai, was launched at UNEP headquarters in Nairobi on 8 November 2006.

Among the first, if not the first tree planted, was an indigenous sapling earthed in the soil of the garden of Meryem Amar-a UNEP staff member based in Nairobi who has been coordinating the UNEP-side of the effort including catalysing action as well as registering pledges and plantings on a dedicated web site.

Early pledges included one from the forest restoration NGO Trees for Life; a Colombian radio station; Tree-Nation in Barcelona; the Great Rift Valley Trust; and the Government of Morocco.

A big boost came in Mexico where the Government and local authorities-with support from the army and inspired by President Felipe Calderón-pledged and planted over 200 million trees.

In Kenya the environmental arm of French energy company Total joined the push and in some parts of the world refugees took up the challenge by planting over 9.5 million trees.

The billionth tree planted is believed to be in Ethiopia where, and as part of the country's Millennium Commemoration 2007, close to 700 million trees have been planted alone.

Tewolde Berhan Gebre Egziabher, a UNEP Champion of the Earth and senior member of the country's Environmental Protection Authority, says that amongst the trees planted are the African olive tree and the African pencil cedar.

The initiative, whose other co-patron is His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco, is unlikely to end with the surpassing of the 1 billion trees planted mark.

UNEP is expecting that Guatemala, China and Spain will shortly announce that several million more trees have been planted.

Indonesia is expected today to plant almost 80 million trees in one day in the run up to the Bali Climate Convention meeting next month.

The totals of trees planted are still being collated with the numbers rising almost daily. But the top-ranking countries appear to be Ethiopia, over 700 million trees planted; Mexico, 217 million trees; Turkey, 150 million; Kenya, 100 million; Cuba, 96.5 million; Rwanda, 50 million; Republic of Korea, 43 million; Tunisia, 21 million; Morocco, 20 million; Myanmar, 20 million; and Brazil, 16 million. The Green Belt Movement alone planted 4.7 million trees, double the number of trees it had initially pledged.

Dr. Reese is an award-winning conservation scientist, best-selling children's author, syndicated science writer, TV nature documentary host, and professor of Botany at Humboldt State University, California. Dr. Reese's love of Nature began as a child. A springtime tree-planting ritual with his father and brother became his passion. He knew from the time he was a child that he wanted to be a tree scientist and went on to attain three university degrees including a PhD from The University of Melbourne, Australia. British embassy gardener digs in for queen’s visit

WASHINGTON — This is how you plant a tree for a queen: Measure the root ball carefully, drag the dead-weight bundle into its planting hole, cut back the wire basket holding the burlap, and leave just enough of the soil backfilling undone for the tree planting ceremony.
Jim Adams is preparing to do this for Queen Elizabeth II’s impending state visit to Washington. The horticulturist at the eight-acre garden at the British Embassy residence will be on hand next Tuesday as Her Majesty symbolically installs a hybrid English oak on the south lawn. “She’ll have some ceremonial soil throwing,” he said, looking at the little orange flag that marks the tree’s permanent home. “I’m not going to give her the bolt cutters and tell her to cut the basket off.”
This may take a degree of self-control for Adams, who hates to see idle hands in the garden.
In the 18 months since he took charge of the garden around the stately red brick palace by Sir Edwin Lutyens, Adams has set about revitalizing one of the highest profile gardens on Embassy Row. He has hired other gardeners, enlisted a cadre of keen-as-mustard volunteers, and set about imbuing his army of cultivators with energy and enthusiasm that are almost a match for his own.
A slight, boyish-looking native of Michigan, Adams is mindful of the iconic place of the garden in British mythology, and yet he is reviving a tired landscape in a way that is neither strictly British nor distinctly American. It is, however, entirely Jim Adams. His style is a Type A blend of organization and inspiration, and those who have seen Adams’ work elsewhere have little doubt that the ambassador and his wife, Sir David and Lady Catherine Manning, have got themselves one helluva gardener.
“I think he’s one of the best plantsmen in the country,” says Derya Samadi, one of his assistants, “and they’re lucky to have him here.”
Adams, 40, is working furiously to prepare the garden for the royal visit. Any dead branches have been excised in recent weeks. A medlarfruit tree that blew over in a summer storm and refused to leaf out will be grist for the chipper before the official festivities. The cool and warm greenhouses are stuffed with perennials, annuals and tropicals that have been nurtured through the winter and will decorate the garden, residence and portico.
Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip begin their official tour today in Richmond, Va., and conclude the visit Tuesday, hosting a dinner for President and Mrs. Bush at the residence. Monarch and consort will hold a Buckingham Palace-style garden party May 7 for embassy staff. The tree planting is scheduled for the next day.

Perhaps this quote from the book "A Natural History of Trees" can inspire you as it has me.

"The North American Sylva - our tree flora - is the grandest in the temperate zones of the Earth, and in some ways the grandest anywhere.
It has the tallest and the mightiest trees; it boasts so many kinds that there is no one who can say that he (or she) has seen them all in the life, and could name them every one on sight.
It has still the densest strands of merchantable timer in the world; when the first Europeans came to our shores, our virgin forests, stretching from ocean to ocean and from Arctic strand to Tropic, staggered the belief.
Not in historic times have a great people and a great forest met in so tense a drama.
That drama had the elements of the Greek tragedies, for it was the inevitable collision of destined forces.
To each, the other force represented fate.
The forests of America brought out in us, as fate will do, both our best and worst; they molded and they exposed us.
We, in our human way, have brought out of the trees not best and worst - since trees are beyond moral judgment - but ever new qualities.
First the trees were barriers and ambushes, then they became blockhouses and cabins, gun stocks and cradles, wagon wheels and railway ties.
Now they are airplanes and newsprint, plastics and prefabrications.
They remain our greatest renewable resource, and as every month brings forth fresh and more spectacular discoveries in wood technology, they may claim to be the most versatile of all crops.

Always they have been, and will be, beauty and peace.

They are the best we have left of wilderness, and the witnesses to our finest moments; trees still standing could tell us how Boone and Lincoln, Lewis and Clark, Washington and Penn took shelter beneath them or laid a hand on the bole while speaking."

John continued to explain that ... this book was originally copyrighted in 1948, so it is dated.
It's just a reference book, but it's written with love for bough, sap and leaf.
Look at the concrete jungle all around and imagine a time when the trees were still in place, incorporated into the landscape instead of just being leveled with the land, giving shade and cool in summer and making the air smell nicer.
I think it's important for our children to see a tree and be able to identify it.
Sycamores are easy to remember for their bark.
The difference between red and white pine is two needles per bunch.
You can eat the needles of the Eastern Hemlock.
They taste like they smell.
Something to nibble on during those long hikes.
Trees are like people.

Here's a line about the Jack Pine:
"The great North Woods of Canada and the northern United States boast three Pines, the stately White, once the most valuable of all the timber trees, the Red, hard and strong and noble of aspect, and the present species, the Jack Pine, a mere runt as to height and grace, a weed in the opinion of the lumberman, fit for nothing but pulpwood."

Do you think there is just one kind of Oak?
Think again!
There are Pin Oak, Black Oak, Red Oak, White Oak, Swamp Oak.

My favorite tree is the stately Tulip Tree, or Yellow Poplar.

The trunks on the ones that I have seen are so straight and don't have any branches for the first 40 feet or more.
The leaves are the most noble and could be used for a national emblem like the maple leaf.

At this point in time, the powers that be are only now announcing that there is indeed a Global Warming problem.

On February 2, 2007, the press release reported that world scientists "confirmed" humans cause Global Warming.

As Dr. Dan Lashof, at Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC)'s Climate Center, stated: "This new IPCC report makes it clear that global warming is here now, and we must take swift and effective action to stave off the most severe consequences."

Higher temperatures threaten dangerous consequences: drought, disease, floods, lost ecosystems. And from sweltering heat to rising seas, global warming's effects have already begun. But solutions are in sight. We know where most heat-trapping gases come from: power plants and vehicles. And we know how to curb their emissions: modern technologies and stronger laws. Imagine our country's New Year's resolutions ...

"1) A comprehensive carbon emissions tax on industry.
2) Renewed and increased tax breaks for hybrid vehicle purchases.
3) Real tax incentives for green technology investment.
4) And here's a wild idea I just thought of: free low wattage fluorescent light bulbs for every low income and elderly American. In other words, a 100 percent tax refund for every low wattage light bulb purchased. Call it the Affordable Electricity Act. Low income households and senior citizens would save on their electricity bills and get their bulbs for free while we reduce carbon emissions."

This low wattage fluorescent light bulb idea is simple and brilliant.
Even my friend's 12-year-old, Sammie, said she wants to sell such light bulbs to raise money and use the profits to plant more trees!

Global Warming Goes to Court

The Bush administration has been on a six-year campaign to expand its powers, often beyond what the Constitution allows.
So it is odd to hear it claim that it lacks the power to slow global warming by limiting the emission of harmful gases.
But that is just what it will argue to the Supreme Court tomorrow, in what may be the most important environmental case in many years.
A group of 12 states, including New York and Massachusetts, is suing the Environmental Protection Agency for failing to properly do its job.
These states, backed by environmental groups and scientists, say that the Clean Air Act requires the E.P.A. to impose limits on carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases emitted by new cars.
These gases are a major contributor to the "greenhouse effect" that is dangerously heating up the planet.
The Bush administration insists that the E.P.A. does not have the power to limit these gases.
It argues that they are not "air pollutants" under the Clean Air Act.
Alternatively, it contends that the court should dismiss the case because the states do not have "standing," since they cannot show that they will be specifically harmed by the agency's failure to regulate greenhouse gases.
A plain reading of the Clean Air Act shows that the states are right.
The act says that the E.P.A. "shall" set standards for "any air pollutant" that in its judgment causes or contributes to air pollution that "may reasonably be anticipated to endanger public health or welfare."
The word "welfare," the law says, includes "climate" and "weather."
The E.P.A. makes an array of specious arguments about why the act does not mean what it expressly says.
But it has no right to refuse to do what Congress said it "shall" do.
Beneath the statutory and standing questions, this is a case about how seriously the government takes global warming.
The E.P.A.'s decision was based in part on its poorly reasoned conclusion that there was too much "scientific uncertainty" about global warming to worry about it.
The government's claim that the states lack standing also scoffs at global warming, by failing to acknowledge that the states have a strong interest in protecting their land and citizens against coastal flooding and the other kinds of damage that are being projected.
In a friend-of-the-court brief, climate scientists from the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies, Stanford University and other respected institutions warn that "the scientific evidence of the risks, long time lags and irreversibility of climate change argue persuasively for prompt regulatory action."
The Supreme Court can strike an important blow in defense of the planet simply by ruling that the E.P.A. must start following the law.

Likewise, we must endeavor to ensure that our egos do not become a barrier that prevents us from recognizing that even perceived mistakes and strife can be profound lessons that smooth the progress of personal evolution.
When we understand that we only need to enthusiastically try our best to realize our objectives, the universe will take care of the details, propelling us forward in its unstoppable current.
We may not always immediately understand the significance of certain experiences, but our trust will help us choose wisely at each crossroads.
The universe wants to see you accomplish your goals.
No matter how long you've dallied or hesitated, it will always be there to put its plan for you in motion at the first sign of your faith.
You can make the most of this aid by acquiescing to it rather than fighting it-nurture your dreams but do not attempt to micromanage every detail along the way.
The universe will provide you with guidance and, if you heed that guidance, you will find your formerly stressful quest for success will become a journey of great joy.

Tech Support: The first step is to open your Heart. Have you located your Heart?

Customer:
Yes, but there are several other programs running now. Is it okay to install Love while they are running?

Tech Support:
What programs are running ?

Customer:
Let's see, I have Past Hurt, Low Self-Esteem, Grudge and Resentment running right now.

Tech Support:
No problem, Love will gradually erase Past Hurt from your current operating system. It may remain in your permanent memory but it will no longer disrupt other programs. Love will eventually override Low Self-Esteem with a module of its own called High Self-Esteem. However, you have to completely turn off Grudge and Resentment. Those programs prevent Love from being properly installed. Can you turn those off ?

Customer:
I don't know how to turn them off. Can you tell me how?

Tech Support:
With pleasure. Go to your start menu and invoke Forgiveness. Do this as many times as necessary until Grudge and Resentment have been completely erased.

Customer:
Okay, done! Love has started installing itself. Is that normal?

Tech Support:
Yes, but remember that you have only the base program. You need to begin connecting to other Hearts in order to get the upgrades.

Customer:
Oops! I have an error message already. It says, "Error -Program not run on external components." What should I do?

Tech Support:
Don't worry. It means that the Love program is set up to run on Internal Hearts, but has not yet been run on your Heart. In non-technical terms, it simply means you have to Love yourself before you can Love others.

Customer:
So, what should I do?

Tech Support:
Pull down Self-Acceptance; then click on the following files: Forgive-Self; Realize Your Worth; and Acknowledge your Limitations.

Customer:
Okay, done.

Tech Support:
Now, copy them to the "My Heart" directory. The system will overwrite any conflicting files and begin patching faulty programming. Also, you need to delete Verbose Self-Criticism from all directories and empty your Recycle Bin to make sure it is completely gone and never comes back.

Customer:
Got it. Hey! My heart is filling up with new files. Smile is playing on my monitor and Peace and Contentment are copying themselves all over My Heart. Is this normal?

Tech Support:
Sometimes. For others it takes a while, but eventually everything gets it at the proper time. So Love is installed and running. One more thing before we hang up. Love is Freeware. Be sure to give it and its various modules to everyone you meet. They will in turn share it with others and return some cool modules back to you.

There is a time when you learn to see your own faults.
I see that I know more about loving trees than saving trees.
Saving the planet is more than wishing it to happen.

It is not easy to leave my comfort level and go to where I dare, where I must make bold moves, understood by few and misunderstood and construed by MANY as not right.
Once the world was thought round, so being the different thinker is not the common ground nor the accepted path ... but it is the colorful path to progress and positive growth.

Fail forward fast means making mistakes along the way.
But as Bill Allen said to me in a group, while taking a walk together in Anaheim, "Entrepreneurs are MASTERS of Rejection".

So I feel as a reject now from society.
But is is just a phase to be written about in a book, sooner than later, about the trials and tribulations of seeding, nurturing, and growing the icon of green responsibility ... thank you G-d for your guidance and thank you family for our teamwork.

The mission of the American Lung Association is to prevent lung disease and promote lung health.
Why then is the American Lung Association writing articles about GREEN driving?

Answer: The health of our air directly impacts the health of our lungs.

To clean the air we all share, please follow the tips, below, they're fair!
(Hmmm - sounds like Dr. Suess is on the loose!)

1. "Trip chain" more often: combine your errands into one trip.
It helps you get things done, and it helps reduce air pollution.
When you first start a car after it has been sitting for more than an hour, it pollutes up to five times more than when the engine's warm.

2. Take mass transit, share a ride, or car pool.
Even if you do it just once or twice a week, you'll reduce traffic congestion and pollution, and save money.
The average driver spends about 44 cents per mile including ownership and maintenance.

3. Have fun! Ride your bike.
It's a great way to travel and it can help you and the air get into condition. Vehicles on the road create more than 25% of all air pollution nationwide.

4. Take things in stride.
Walk or in-line skate instead of driving.
They're easy ways to get exercise, and they're easy on the air.

5. Care for your car.
Regular maintenance and tune-ups, changing the oil and checking tire inflation can improve gas mileage, extend your car's life and increase its resale value.
It can also reduce traffic congestion due to preventable breakdowns and it could reduce your car's emissions by more than half.

6. Get fuel when it's cool.
Refueling during cooler periods of the day or in the evening can prevent gas fumes from heating up and creating ozone.
And that can help reduce ozone alert days.

7. Don't top off the tank.
It releases gas fumes into the air and cancels the benefits of the pump's anti-pollution devices.
So stopping short of a full tank is safer and reduces pollution.

8. Telecommute. Work at home sometimes.
You'll save time and money, and reduce emissions and traffic congestion.

9. Know before you go.
If your area has a travel and transit information network, use it by calling, visiting the web site or tuning into the cable station.
Get travel and transit updates before you leave home and you won't get stuck in a jam.

Larry Jones of Feed the Children promotes Reforestation

During an inter-active interview today, Larry Jones of Feed the Children (www.feedthechildren.org) spoke of the need for reforestation (re-planting of tress) internationally.
Feed the Children has studied and is a living case study of how to end world hunger.
An underlying step is to address environmental disasters, human impact and violence.

Greening the Planet with Willie Nelson

Friday, September 8, 2006 ... Plant a Tree USA and Willie Nelson spoke face-to-face and shared their eye-to-eye views on greening the planet!

As an honored guest in the audience, Plant a Tree USA felt the environment abundant in delight and peace as Willie sang.

After the warm-up rehearsal where Willie Nelson was accompanied by the LA Philharmonic, Cindy of Plant a Tree USA was invited into Willie's private trailer.
There, Willie was intent to listen and to give.
Willie sang his new not-yet-released song Laws of Nature, which he has given to OCHO RICOS to end poverty in the world through music and dance.
He moved his hands in a sideways figure eight shape, and the soul of the music was directed out to the world.
Willie sang of the sun and the water and the trees ... of nature and us as one ... it was beautiful.

Just imagine it … the all-American greatest country singer Willie Nelson serenading Plant a Tree USA to success.

Inside Willie Nelson's trailer at the Hollywood Bowl, Cindy explained to Willie that Plant a Tree USA is actively looking for farmers across the USA who are interested in having trees planted on their lands.
Cindy asked Willie if he knew farmers who would want Plant a Tree USA to pay them to plant trees on their property.
Willie grinned and said he knew MANY.

Willie then asked Mark Victor Hansen to give Cindy the name of the head woman at Farm Aid to contact.

USANA Health Sciences upgrades its facilities with clean energy

SALT LAKE CITY — USANA Health Sciences, Inc., a leading manufacturer and direct seller of nutritional supplement and personal care products, has made a large renewable energy purchase from Rocky Mountain Power. USANA is buying 750 blocks of Blue Sky wind energy per month, which qualifies it as a Visionary-level partner in the program. Its purchase offsets 900 tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year. That has the environmental benefit of planting 354 acres of trees or taking 154 cars off the road for a year. USANA’s Blue Sky purchase is equivalent to the amount of electricity used by 107 typical Utah households each month. “Our company’s vision is to love life and to live it to its fullest in happiness and health. We are all responsible for our stewardship as inhabitants of this earth,” said USANA’s Georgiann Hernandez, workforce management administrator. Rocky Mountain Power’s Blue Sky program gives both residential and business customers a way to increase the demand for clean, renewable wind energy and to take advantage of its environmental benefits. It is sold in 100 kilowatt-hour increments, called blocks, for $1.95 per block per month in addition to a customer’s regular bill. USANA employs approximately 450 people at its corporate headquarters in Salt Lake City and more than 750 people worldwide. “We are expanding our headquarters and we are integrating renewable energy resources, including solar panels for our new building and parking area,” Hernandez said. “In 2007, we plan to retrofit our existing building to improve its energy efficiency.” USANA offers recycling programs and encourages carpooling, bicycling and public transportation. Also, Hernandez said that studies are underway to identify areas within the company’s manufacturing process where it can reduce waste. “Rocky Mountain Power already buys renewable energy for its customers, but USANA is helping bring even more wind power into the system and encouraging wind farm development through its Blue Sky purchase,” said Dave Spalding, Rocky Mountain Power corporate account manager. Wind is an attractive form of energy generation because it helps reduce greenhouse-gas emissions. Just one block of Blue Sky has the same environmental benefit of either planting about a half acre of trees or not driving 2,500 miles. Enrollment is optional, and customers can increase their participation or withdraw at any time.
